Painting – A Quest for Traces

“Only by doing what we love – creatively and with ingenuity – will we find happiness!”

What is painting? What is a painted image? A painted surface? Or a depiction of reality? An attempt, a mistake, and a process of discovery? Or a new system in old attire, a medium and a sign of perception? A sketch, an object, a dream, or a distortion? A copy or an original? An invention?

Painting questions perception and is a process. The prerequisite is a process of searching. Each new subject explores new approaches, investigates worlds and spaces, and creates its own justification for existence. Sometimes it provides answers, but often many questions remain. An image does not always aim for answers – the search continues. The image merely serves as a medium in the attempt to depict a new reality.

Imagination, reflection, and consciousness are deeply interconnected in the creative process. Imagination is the ability to form new ideas, images, or concepts that are not immediately available to our senses. It allows the artist to explore beyond the tangible world and bring abstract or unseen ideas to life.

Reflection, on the other hand, is the act of thinking deeply about these images, concepts, or experiences. It involves critically analyzing one’s own creations or the world around them, often leading to new insights or deeper understanding. Artists reflect on their work to refine and deepen the meaning and expression.

Consciousness, in this context, is the awareness of both the internal and external world. It is the state in which the artist processes their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. Consciousness enables an artist to make decisions about how to represent or reinterpret what they observe or feel.

Together, these three elements shape the artistic experience, guiding the artist from conception to creation, and allowing them to express complex ideas, emotions, and perceptions through their work.

Painting is an immediate search. Imagination, biography, reflection, and consciousness flow into the painting, shaping its content and establishing the connection. The artist is the medium. The technique is experience and training that brings the painting to life. Thus, the engagement with changing motifs and challenges of the artist gains its value only through the connection to the creating artist for the viewer.

“Montages of naturalistic modern and traditional views shape the painting of the artist Nikolaus Kriese. He develops his imagery with a preference for daily encounters with architecture, spaces, landscapes, and objects. In the blend of color structures and spatial structures, each painting is both colorfully decorative and at the same time, realistically interpretative.”

The power of creation & perception

Therefore, a painting should primarily present the viewer with the creative power of creation: the ability to develop an unbiased perception and reflection; the ability to engage in a free viewing of the painting, in contrast to a learned stance; and thus, with their own means and forms, to see the image.

Thus, for the artist, painting is primarily a process of searching for traces and structure. However, there will never be a finished picture. The painted image is never complete; rather, it represents an attempt within the process of exploration. In a way, it is the shaping of the process through its technical creation that results in the formation of an artwork— a self-contained system with a drive toward explainability.

Which motifs are possible?

There are no limits when it comes to having a picture painted. You are welcome to send me several photos, which I will then combine to create a design. Before the commissioned artwork is realized, you will receive one or more drafts so that you can decide at your leisure whether you like the motif. If you are satisfied with the design for the desired painting, I will begin with the realization of your painting.

When do I pay for the commissioned artwork?

You pay for your artwork in full when the order is confirmed. The delivery time depends on the complexity and size of the commissioned artwork. For a less complex motif with quick-drying colors, the waiting time is approx. 14 days. A further three to five working days must be added for any framing and shipping of the commissioned artwork.

More elaborate paintings in oil paint need a little longer to dry before they are ready for dispatch. Here the waiting time is between 14 and 30 days plus shipping time. Insured shipping is available in Germany and worldwide.
