Contemporary Artist Miami – Paintings by Nikolaus Kriese
Nikolaus Kriese is a German contemporary painter whose artistic practice has developed over more than three decades. His current work moves between gestural abstraction, figurative fragments, writing, architecture and landscape.
Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Kriese creates paintings in which personal experience meets contemporary culture, technology, nature and social change. Many recent works are created on a large scale, transforming color, gesture and fragmented imagery into immersive pictorial spaces.
With its international art community, architecture, strong culture of collecting and distinctive relationship between city and landscape, Miami provides an intriguing context for this body of work.
Contemporary Painting Between Abstraction and the Present
Kriese’s paintings are developed through an open process of layering, drawing, painting, erasing and reconstruction.
Rather than following a predetermined composition, each work evolves through the act of painting itself. Figurative elements may emerge beside abstract structures, while words, symbols and fragments of architecture become part of the visual field. The result is a painting that remains deliberately open: between control and spontaneity, observation and memory, abstraction and recognizable reality.
Selected Works

Sand Hill Rd 1 Mile (2026) – Oil on canvas • 200 x 300 cm
SAND HILL RD 1 MILE refers to the Silicon Valley road synonymous with venture capital, technology and extraordinary wealth. Hand-painted layers of color, signs and fragmented imagery transform capital flows, investments and networks into an open, almost cosmic landscape.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN (2026) – OIL ON CANVAS • 200 X 300 CM
HOW IT ALL BEGAN revolves around the idea of origin—the moment when light, energy and motion give rise to the first forms of order. The painting unfolds between two poles: a deep cosmic blue and a glowing red sphere reminiscent of a supernova, a stellar core or the beginning of a universe.
Miami – Color, Architecture and Contemporary Culture
Miami occupies a distinctive position within contemporary art. International influences meet the cultural histories of Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean, while museums, galleries, private collections and independent art spaces form a highly visible artistic ecosystem.
The city’s relationship between architecture, vegetation, water, intense light and urban development creates another layer of visual experience.
For Nikolaus Kriese, these contrasts provide an interesting point of reference. His paintings similarly bring together elements that do not necessarily belong to a single narrative: nature and technology, abstraction and figuration, construction and freedom.
Color as Space
Color plays a central role in the recent paintings of Nikolaus Kriese.
Intense blues, reds, pinks, greens and luminous areas of white do not merely describe objects. They construct atmosphere and determine how a painting is experienced physically.
In IN LOVE, layers of red, pink and orange surround an almost luminous center. In other works, expansive fields of blue become spaces in which drawing, writing and figurative fragments appear and disappear.
Especially at dimensions of two or three meters, color begins to extend beyond the conventional experience of a painting and enters into dialogue with the surrounding architecture.
IN LOVE – Painting as Immediate Experience
IN LOVE, 2026 is a large-scale oil painting measuring 200 × 300 cm. Intense fields of red, pink and orange collide with drawing, writing, overpainting and fragmented imagery. At the center of the work, a bright opening creates an almost physical concentration of light.
The words “IN LOVE” remain immediately recognizable while simultaneously becoming part of the painting itself. Personal experience, language and abstraction overlap until no single interpretation dominates the work.
Landscape, Nature and Constructed Worlds
Landscape repeatedly appears in the work of Nikolaus Kriese, although rarely in a traditional sense.
Natural forms, gardens, architecture and imagined environments become material for paintings in which real and constructed spaces overlap.
Works such as EDEN explore this relationship between nature and human imagination. Landscape becomes less a depiction of a particular place than a psychological and cultural space.
This tension between natural environments and constructed realities also creates an interesting connection with Miami – a city where architecture, tropical vegetation, ocean and rapidly changing urban structures exist in immediate proximity.

TESLA IS TESLA, NOT TESLA (2026) – Oil on canvas • 160 x 120 cm
TESLA IS TESLA, NOT TESLA refers to Nikola Tesla and his vision of energy as an open, almost spiritual force. The painting contrasts this idea with today’s technological brands, commercial systems and contemporary interpretations of innovation.
Technology, Signs and Contemporary Life
The visual world of the present is shaped by technology, brands, economic systems, digital communication and an almost continuous stream of images. Fragments of this world appear throughout Kriese’s paintings.
In works such as TESLA IS TESLA NOT TESLA, technical references, writing and abstract structures become part of a larger pictorial field. Words can function simultaneously as information, cultural symbols and purely visual forms.
Rather than illustrating technology or contemporary society, the paintings absorb their traces.
Art, Architecture and Private Collections
Contemporary painting can fundamentally change the perception of an architectural space. Rather than functioning simply as decoration, a large painting can establish scale, rhythm and visual tension within an interior.
Nikolaus Kriese’s free works are developed independently in ongoing groups and series. Individual paintings are held in private and institutional collections.
